The Formula for Great Design Everyone Understands

Often times our clients task us with creating and building a site for a wide audience where many different user goals must be achieved. Regardless of who the audience is, it is crucial to create one seamless design with a clean and simple aesthetic. Also important, and sometimes overlooked, are the requirements necessary to meet the high standards of designing a user-friendly experience.

The United States Web Design Standards is a good resource for all to reference as it is the most basic standards to follow. It is essentially a “shared set of tools to provide consistent, beautiful, and easy-to-use government websites.” (Molly Ruskin, Introducing the U.S. Web Design Standards) Let’s review some topics reviewed, and what we have learned.

“The U.S. Web Design Standards are designed to set a new bar for simplicity and consistency across government services, while providing you with plug-and-play design and code.” – U.S. Web Design Standards

Okay, we understand that simplicity and consistency are the two most important principals of a successful website. Regarding the user experience (UX), simplicity helps users understand and find the appropriate content, while consistency helps them navigate and take desired actions based on what they want to achieve on the site. To enhance the user interface (UI), keeping graphics like icons, buttons and labels simple and easy to understand helps the site look clean but also increases predictability for the user – another essential component.

Tufts Health Plan is one of our latest site launches. Take a look around and the visual styling of the site is something you will notice right away. Typography is huge. It sets up a visually enticing webpage. The font makes the difference between a legible site and not. Proper section headings and titles allows for an easy scan of the content.

Check out T2 Biosystems, another site we recently worked on and you will notice the use of icons, buttons and labeling. An icon is either globally recognizable, or there is some type of labeling alongside it to provide context clues. It is important to keep these designs consistent throughout the entire site, not just on any one page, as it provides users with the feeling of reliability.

What are some sites you frequent that has great design? Feel free to contact us. We’d love to discuss!
